Architects and specifiers : The Summer House Restaurant
Major construction company Kier Eastern asked us to tender for the Summer House Conservatory Restaurant at Newmarket Racecourse, Suffolk. It was to be constructed in white aluminium and would primarily be used during the flat racing season. Part of the brief, however, was to ensure it could operate all year round.
Due to the complexity of the design and build we were selected to undertake the entire project including all building and installation work. Given the size of the building and the weight of the glass roof, a portal frame structure had to be constructed. We used cranes to position the heavy steel in place and an additional lantern roof was

created as part of the design. This enabled the glass sections to be manufactured within the capabilities of the toughening plant. We recommended the use of Comfort Solar Controlled Glass for the whole structure to keep the building cool in summer and warm in winter.
The construction of the foundations took two weeks and, with four of our installers working a further four weeks to complete things ahead of schedule.
