Orangeries were originally developed in the 17th century for cultivating and ripening exotic fruits that would struggle to survive in our sometimes chilly conditions. The walls were made of stone, with tall windows and a glass roof. Originally the ultimate expression of wealth for well to do noblemen and merchants, they are no longer reserved exclusively for horticultural purposes – but they’ve lost none of their kudos as the ultimate form of home extension.
